Cuyahoga Democrat Machine Attempts Appearance of Diversity
in Good Old Boy Network with Selection of County Recorder Candidate

CLEVELAND, OHIO – Cathy Luks, candidate for Cuyahoga County Recorder since January and the only aspirant in the race for the past five weeks, apparently will have an opponent in the general election. Yesterday evening, the county’s Democrat machine voted to put Lillian Greene’s name on the fall ballot to replace that of former County Recorder Patrick O’Malley, who resigned in disgrace last month.

Mike Dovilla, campaign strategist for Mayor Luks, commented on the selection. “Lillian Greene may be an adequate judge, but she has no experience that qualifies her to lead a countywide executive office. This appointment is an obvious political favor to a sitting judge that is consistent with the corrupt, single-party machine that has been running Cuyahoga County for the past two decades.”

In reacting to her imminent selection earlier this week, Greene commented to a local reporter that, “[t]he office needs somebody to restore credibility.” Given the ethical lapses in O’Malley’s personal and political life, a recurring theme among Ohio Democrats this year, Greene is correct. But the appointment of yet another member of the Democrat machine is not the antidote to the leadership failures of Cuyahoga’s countywide elected officials.

“The attempt to plaster over the Democrats’ good old boy network with this selection smacks of political calculation and rank pandering,” stated Dovilla. “The fact that Judge Greene did not receive her own party’s endorsement in her March primary race for Probate Court against a ‘name game’ candidate demonstrates that the Democrat machine cares only about winning elections and perpetuating its rampant patronage system, not representing the people of this county or addressing its many challenges. If Greene wasn’t good enough then to be endorsed for an office in which she actually had the experience to serve, why is she now an acceptable candidate for a countywide office in which she has no relevant background?”
