Update: Bedford PD Shooting

From the Bedford Times Register --

A Bedford man is dead after Bedford police say they returned fire after he shot at them June 20. No one else was injured.

Three officers are on administrative leave while an investigation is pending, according to a detective with Bedford police.

Police stopped Joseph Picciano, 21, on Lincoln Avenue after receiving a call from his mother about 5:15 p.m. that he had left his house on Johnson Avenue with a shotgun.

Police say Picciano got out of his car and allegedly fired at officers.

Police said the crisis intervention team arrived to try to talk to Picciano, but at 6:45 p.m.

Picciano allegedly fired shots at officers again. Officers returned fire, striking Picciano, who was later pronounced dead at UHHS Bedford Medical Center. Three officers are on administrative leave while an investigation is pending.

I heard on the radio this morning that Picciano was hit with three shots. One in the stomach, chest and head.

Glad to see our state of the art gun range in city hall is coming in handy and being put to good use. Nice shot guys, I am glad all the good guys went home safely!

  1. I think the cop that fired the lethal shot should be reprimanded. Death was not necessary...and if you think that for a minute that I was not the one putting my life on the line and being shot at then you need to rethink...cops are to protect....it was not that Joey was shooting to kill anyone...seriously one young 21 year old with a shot guy and many cops who could have defended themselves better with vests etc...out boys in Iraq are faced with worse scenarios

  2. Joey was a young sweet and caring guy who had his life unjustly taken away for probably a mere reason of scared cops who should not have been out on the front line shooting.

May those that murdered Joey not be able to sleep at night and pay for taking an innocent life.

There was no reason for the cops to murder Joey. Yah he was legally an adult but come on...he was 21 and only had a shot gun. He was too young to die. I could see if he had killed, or robbed, or comitted a bad crime. But seriously, why didnt the cops use tazers, or shoot to wound. I think it was an unjust murder. In addition, what kind of negotiators were on the scene? Yeah you can say that some people cant be reasoned with, but it was extrememly poor and untrain efforts in my opinion. I think the police had noting better to do and got to excited. They are there to protect not murder. It was wrong to murder Joey. He did not deserve to be murdered. God forbid that the officers really know how to shoot.

  3. I think that the officers who shot and Murdered Joey should definatley be severly punished. The boy cleary had an issue... All issues can always be resolved...no matter how bad it be... God can get you through anything.... But the cops must have been scared of the scared child how was mentally in pain so they just decided to put him out of his missery. HORRIBLE!!
I knew Joe Years ago..... he was very kind and caring... never wanted to harm another soul... why did the have to shoot him in they head and the chest??? A simple shot to the leg or the arm I'm sure would have sufficed! And I'm sure Joey was extremly outnumbered. He was ONE young man against a troop of poor trained men. What a shame that a wonderful life had to be sacrificed for the ill decisions of an officer.

My love and prayers are with Joey and the Family.

    Much love eternally to Joey!!!

  4. WOW.. Im not tryin to be rude, but everyone that left a comment on here was a friend or relative of Joey. Your opinions are closed minded. He only had a shotgun.. ONLY HAD A SHOTGUN!! I have kids who get baby sat on Lincoln and he is out running around with a loaded shotgun. Why dont all of you who claim the cops to be the bad guys here go watch what happened on the news... JOEY SHOT FIRST!! I would have shot him just as they did. Im sorry you lost a friend/relative, but he was TOTALLY in the wrong in the situation and got what he deserved..

Almost three years have past.Things happen. What were the police to do faced with this?A man shooting, in a residential area!I ask my daughter, what if there was a man outside of our house shooting a gun? What if a bullet killed me or your baby brother?...Then I ask myself what happened to my baby brother. In the mist of our busy lives, take time everyday to love the ones you have in your life,Care, smile, love, all of these things are what matter.Looking back and looking forward, all I can say is how lucky we all are to have life.Try to enjoy everyday and most of all, each other.
