A ninth person was accused Tuesday of taking part in a bribery scheme run out of the Cleveland Water Department.
Peter Zappola, 54, of Aurora, was charged in U.S. District Court with conspiracy to bribe a public official. Zappola worked for a variety of companies that had contracts with the Water Department, including Saints Supply, US Filter and National Waterworks Inc.
Prosecutors said that between 2001 and 2003, Zappola paid bribes to Norman Gore, a Water Department official now serving five years in prison. In return, Gore steered work and approved payments to companies where Zappola worked, prosecutors said.
Three Water Department officials, including Gore, and five contractors have already pleaded guilty in the case.
