Al-Qaeda strikes back at 'Awakening' in Iraq

Yesterday I posted a news release from the United States Central Command how a group of about 1000 Iraqi citizens calling themselves “Sahwa,” an Arabic term that means “awakening,” have been banding together to combat Al-Qaeda.

Located near Kirkuk in northern Iraq, this 'Awakening' group served almost like a neighborhood watch against terrorists. What is different about this Iraqi group from other's is that they were not like the jihadikazes that follow Sadr. Not only is this group working against Al-Qaeda and other extremists, they are doing it in cooperation with U.S. & Iraqi forces.

Not happy with the threat this group creates, Al-Qaeda struck back....

From Al-Jazeera --

A suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq attack in southern Baghdad has killed at least 11 people, including eight members of a Sunni "Awakening" council fighting against the organisation.

Men dressed in Iraqi army uniforms attacked the village of Howr Rajab, killing three soldiers before seizing a military vehicle and assaulting the council's headquarters.

"The Iraqi army intervened and along with Awakening members fought back. There were fierce clashes ... which are still ongoing," an Awakening member told AFP news agency. More...

One can only hope that with the estimated 1600 Iraqi refugees returning home everyday ( It's about damn time too!), more will step up and form their own groups to combat Al-Qaeda and the other jihadikazes.
