Cleveland - Bay Village Mayor Debbie Sutherland, a candidate for County Commission, today thanked Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted for including a permissive provision in the county reform amendment that will allow even greater efficiency through regionalism and consolidation of government functions.

For more than a decade, I have seen how much overlap exists in our current County government structure; bloated payrolls, duplication of service, lack of accountability and waste of taxpayer dollars, Sutherland said. As past president of the Mayors and Managers Association, Sutherland said she has worked to foster greater regional cooperation to strengthen the economy and create jobs.

Sutherland also credited Representative Josh Mandel (RLyndhurst) for working with the Speaker toward adding a provision which allows governments to enter into agreements to save costs. Representative Mandels language reinforces regional cooperation by providing firm standing for governments to work to save taxpayer dollars. Sutherland said. As Mayor of Bay Village and Past President of the Cuyahoga County Mayors and City Managers Association, I have seen how much cost savings can occur with government collaboration. The Mandel language encourages more cooperation.

I want to thank my Democratic friend Tim Hagan and my Republican friend Jon Husted for putting aside partisan interests and working on a real solution for our County, Sutherland said. It is precisely this type of bipartisan effort that will bring genuine and needed reform.

Sutherland, who is running for the commission seat now held by Peter Lawson Jones, strongly supports placing the reform amendment on the November ballot and will work with other elected officials in Cuyahoga County for its passage.

To eradicate the wasteful spending, the Commissioners must put this issue before voters, she said. Cuyahoga County is bleeding jobs, population and other immeasurable assets by the day. This legislation allows County voters to determine how their government should work for them.

Once enacted, the Commissioners must allow the voters to make that determination when each of us goes to the polls this November, Sutherland concluded.

  1. So, as many see it, Sutherland is using her postion, and her tax-payer's paid salary, to find another job. I very much doubt she is campaigning on her off-duty hours. Ultimately, she is not giving her all for the citizens of Bay Village, the community that pays her.

  2. Hi Eric - thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Comments like yours from another Bay resident were left on a previous post.

This makes me ask why would an elected official, who appears to have upset many of her residents with this fruitless bid for commissioner continue to run?

I understand the city is facing a financial crisis and she continues pushing her expensive visions of granduer with Bay's taxes. I also posted on here earlier about a spat she was having with the Bay Village Fire Dept. Search "Sutherland" on here and you will see the posts.

I am besides myself that she would jump on the bandwagon with the democrat county reform measure. This confirms what many inside our party has previously thought about her.

This explains her decision to run against PLJ only AFTER locking up donors that would have given to Hagan had she ran against him.

It is not that a bipartisan fix is bad, it is that the proposed reform is a terrible idea.

She is in bed with the usual corporate names that have brought Cleveland to a complete stop while these guys fill their pockets on our backs.

When they could no longer control Dimora - the PD and Greater Cleveland Partenership hatched this new reform plan. She will be just another tool for them to use.
