Saturday, February 03, 2007

WASHINGTON — A Democratic love-fest came to a screeching halt Friday after a high-ranking Hispanic party official abruptly resigned amid allegations he used a racial slur during a heated argument with a black aide to Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean.

Alvaro Cifuentes was chairman of the DNC's Hispanic Caucus and is well-known in national Hispanic Democratic circles.

Cifuentes was attending the DNC's winter meeting in Washington, D.C., on Friday when he and the aide got into an argument.

It's not clear what started the fight, but sources said Cifuentes called the aide, who is black, "boy" twice during the confrontation, and two conference attendees were alarmed enough to try and restrain Cifuentes.

Sources said they believed Cifuentes' actions to be physically intimidating, and his words racially insensitive. More.....

Rep. Sanchez Steps Down From Caucus

Thursday, February 01, 2007 Fox News

NEW YORK — A firestorm erupted Wednesday within the Congressional Hispanic Caucus when California Rep. Loretta Sanchez quit in protest of Rep. Joe Baca's chairmanship and alleged mistreatment of women.

Sanchez, in her fifth term representing California's 47th District, reportedly is furious at fellow California Democrat, Baca, for alleged derogatory remarks. In an interview with Politico.com she accused him of calling her a "whore." More....

Seems like a lot of name calling from the party that preaches acceptance.

Rep. Joe Baca says it is a personality conflict between them. In the Politico.com interview Rep. Sanchez is quoted as saying -

"I'm not going to be a part of the CHC as long as Mr. Baca illegally holds the chair …

I told them no. There's a big rift here," Sanchez said. "You treat the women like shit. I have no use for him."

"I told them to take me off the list, take me off the Web site, take me off everything," Sanchez said.

Seems like more than a personality conflict to me. Here is the whole interview.

Or maybe Rep. Baca and Alvaro Cifuentes are just voicing their true feelings?
