O' Connor to run for Chief Justice of Ohio Supreme Court

With Chief Justice Moyer being forced into retirement because of age requirements, and the other Republican Ohio Supreme Court Justices - Evelyn Lundberg Stratton & Paul E. Pfeifer - declaring they will not be entering the 2010 race - Ohio Supreme Court Justice Maureen O' Connor has declared that she will be seeking the highest judicial position in Ohio.

Stratton has declined to enter the race to spend more time with her family and Pfeifer refuses to run against another Republican for this position. During her succesful '08 reelection bid, O'Connor was described in her PD endorsement as pleasant surprise on the court...
She has been an outspoken advocate for more transparency and has often brought an important voice of reason and moderation to a court whose members are all Republicans. She has earned re-election.

This should be great news right? Well, it is - but there is the usual but(t).... like a washed up, punch drunk, retired, has-been boxer wanting to make a comeback for his last shot of glory - Jim Petro, the political retread of Cuyahoga County, has thrown his hat in the ring for chief justice. I swear the guy is like gum or Rover's sidewalk remains stuck on the bottom of your shoe.

Yes, just when he should be throwing in the long over due towel for his political career, the loser in the GOP primary for Governor with Blackwell, Petro will place personal achievements agaisnt what is best for all voters in Ohio....
Petro said serving as chief justice is "one of those jobs I would love to have."

Petro said he has received encouragement to run from GOP activists worried that if O'Connor or another Republican member of the court wins the chief justice post, then Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland will name a replacement for that justice.

"Republican activists have been concerned about losing a seat on the court and that's what distinguishes me from all the other candidates," Petro said, referring to other justices who might run for chief justice. "If successful, I don't cause us to lose a seat."

There is that word I hate and Petro hangs his hat on - IF! Well, Mr. Retread - IF my mother had a "set" she could have been my father! But coming from the putrid pool of personal gain over party interest, Cuyahoga County Republicans - I would expect nothing less of Petro.

When O'Connor is successful in her bid to become chief justice - there would be a vacancy which Rev. Strickland would surely appoint a Democrat to fill the void. This appointment would not change anything and they would have to defend the seat in 2012, which as O'Connor points out - Petro can run at the time.

guy got 43% in a primary when he was in office. now he expects to beat a sitting justice, who just so happened to get the most votes in the state in 2008?

i'm sure stan chesley is foaming at the mouth, though, at the thought that his stooge could be the next chief justice

  2. Anon - I believe he gets it from Dennis Kookcinich.

I laugh most when he says republican activists are asking him to run for this seat when they should be asking him to run away. Personally I wouldn't even let the guy "run" for a gallon of milk.

  5. Justice O'Connor is a righ-wintg political hack.

She was a horrible trial court judge. Her only goal is to further the cause of the insurance lobby and the chamber of commerce. she has no business being Chief Justice let alone on the Supreme Court.

  7. Hey Anti-O'Connor Anonymous, how thanks for coming on the site, its good to see that the PetroBots are out already. Just one question, how is Jim going to fashion together a pay-to-play scheme at the Supreme Court, I mean he did a hell of a job at the AG's office shaking people down, he must have big plans with the Ohio Supremes
