Trakas won his first public office in 1991, serving on the Independence City Council for two terms. In 1996, Trakas was elected Chairman of the Republican Party of Cuyahoga County (RPCC), an office he held until 2005.

In 1998, Trakas was elected to the 15th and later 17th District of the Ohio House of Representatives. He served for four terms, also assuming the role of House Majority Whip for two terms.
